The Lonely Ones by Gus Powell

7 to 22 November 2015

Inspired by the great car toonist William Steig and his classic book from 1942, "The Lonely Ones" (which pairs Steig’s line-drawn characters with simple one-liners of dialogue), American photographer Gus Powell made his own “lonely ones”— evocative color photographs of interiors and landscapes, inhabited by people, animals and inanimate characters. Gracefully moving from humor to beauty to pathos, these images and their one-liners cumulatively build into a powerful visual and emotional experience.

This exhibition coincides with the publication of The Lonely Ones by Gus Powell by J&L Books.

This exhibition is organized within Photo Saint Germain.

Everything is Metaphorical: Recent Landscape Paintings by Reid Masselink

18 June - 17 July 2015

The paintings in the exhibition depict landscapes, most of which were entirely painted onsite in the Forest of Fontainebleau over the course of the last two years. Although the paintings are highly realistic depictions of nature, the life, movement, and individuality of all the parts suggest a world in which the plants and rocks are the actors in a dramatic event. It is historical painting, but with oaks, boulders, and moss as the main characters. In this arena trees become stand-ins for humans, branches for open arms, and vines for our varied entanglements. In other words, “everything is metaphorical.”
